This particular sound is characterized above all by a quality that is difficult to describe in words and cannot be captured in a frequency curve; it is simply the unmistakable tube sound. The volca nubass is the first analog synthesizer whose oscillator is equipped with a Nutube, the latest generation of vacuum tube. The combination of a vacuum tube and analog sound generation results in a particularly warm, fat, and overtone-rich sound. The well-known transistor-based ladder filter delivers the sound of a classic bass machine, paired with overdrive and powerful-sounding distortion. A next-generation acid bass machine that combines classic sound with the advantages of modern synthesizer design – the volca nubass.

Groundbreaking Nutube technology at the heart of the volca nubass

The Nutube is equipped with two independent triodes. One is used in the oscillator to generate either a sawtooth or square wave. The second triode is used in the sub-oscillator drive circuit, which provides an octave lower for added punch and warmth. Both the oscillator and sub-oscillator use a circuit design that produces the harmonic character that only a real vacuum tube can deliver.

Transistor Ladder Low-Pass Filter for a characteristic sound

The low-pass filter defines the sound of this bass machine. It uses a transistor ladder design that can also be found in classic analog bass synthesizers. This filter stands out for its unique dynamics, as it affects the sound more than simply making it sound brighter or darker. Its wide range of sonic possibilities makes it ideal for use in a wide variety of dance music genres. For example, it can produce the characteristic modulations typical of acid house, or with increased resonance, create sounds with a particularly sharp tonal character that are especially well suited for techno.

Analog drive circuit

The volca nubass features an overdrive effect based on the analog circuit of a classic stompbox. When the control is turned to the right, the volume is compressed with a slight distortion that pleasantly enriches the bass sounds. The tone control adjusts the intensity of the high frequencies.

A 16-step sequencer for automating various parameters

The volca nubass features a 16-step sequencer that offers a wide range of functions. In combination with a drum machine, it makes it easy to create rhythm tracks and musical loops. As with the rest of the volca series, the 16 buttons can be used to program the step sequencer or as a keyboard for real-time recording. The Chain function allows multiple sequencer patterns to be played one after another, enabling up to 16 different sequences to be linked together. The Motion Sequence function allows you to record control movements to change the sound over time. This function can be used, for example, to create loops or for dynamic and original live performances. Up to 16 sequencer patterns with their respective motion sequences can be stored in the internal memory.

Three functions that get the volca nubass grooving

The volca nubass sequencer provides three functions that enable the accent and slide techniques typical of characteristic acid bass. These transpose, accent, and slide functions are accessible and adjustable via the step sequencer. The transpose function plays a note one or two octaves higher. This adds movement to the bassline while remaining within the set scale. The accent function emphasizes a note, creating greater dynamics and a more expressive rhythm. And the slide function creates a smooth transition between two notes, which is almost indispensable in the acid sound. Use these functions to give your sequences their own groove, and the volca nubass will instantly make your performances and compositions sound more lively. All three of these functions can also be programmed with random parameters. In addition to generating unpredictable patterns, various settings can also be controlled using the random function to add even more variation to the patterns and achieve completely unexpected and surprising results.

Connections for synchronizing with KORG grooveboxes and other devices

Since the device features sync in and out ports for easy connection with KORG grooveboxes, it can also be connected to other volca devices, all synthesizers in the logue series, or equipment such as an electribe2 or an SQ-1 to easily synchronize the individual sequencers with each other. It also features a standard MIDI IN port, allowing the volca nubass to be used as a sound module for your DAW.

Free software bundle

The volca nubass comes with an extensive selection of music software, including the OZONE Elements program by iZotope, with which you can not only create songs but also master them using AI, the Skoove software, which can help you expand your keyboard playing skills, as well as the Reason Lite DAW and various software instruments from KORG and other manufacturers. In other words, this means that at the same time you use your synthesizer for the first time, you will already have a wide selection of professional software tools with which you can take your music to the next level.
